Neighborhoods, communities and regional assets were all highlighted this fall by local artists who shared their talents to beautify downtown storefront windows in this round of Activated Spaces.

With over 780 unique votes, the Fall 2011 Round of Activated Spaces encouraged many Daytonians to take a look at the city in a whole new way. Artists featured the neighborhoods, parks, businesses, gardens, people, buildings, and events that make Dayton a great place to live. Congratulations to People’s Choice Winner Amanda Sue Allen! Amanda focused on innovators from the Huffman and Wright-Dunbar Historic Districts. Her work will be featured in a special exhibit at one of downtown’s popular hotspots – De’Lish Cafe.

 

Other talented artists from this round include:

  • Sonya Conti paints to express emotion and convey spiritual and conceptual ideas to the viewer. Her works encourage you to reflect upon the past, present and future.
  • Robin Dakin asks “What’s in your ‘hood?” by featuring local historic neighborhoods on car hoods – showing a true mixture of Dayton’s machining past and innovative and artistic future.
  • The Dayton Creative Syndicate brought many talents together to showcase the collaborative and community-based spirit of the South Park neighborhood.
  • Kidtee Hello shows the true beauty of Dayton and tells the story of why local Daytonians continue to believe in the power and beauty of our region.
  • Mikee Huber offers a glimpse into the most interesting, unique and characteristics doors that welcome neighbors throughout the Dayton community.
  • Mary Baker Koch shows off some “sexy veggies” as she looks closely at some of the wonderful produce found at the Second Street Public Market.
  • Tracy Kraft shares her great talent with interior design as she adds color, texture and interest to her windows.
  • Tony Kroeger shows Dayton in a unique way – with maps that are reminiscent of the London underground and local amusement parks.
  • Jacqui Theobald focuses on the urban garden nestled within her community and highlights how a little work in the dirt brings neighbors together.
  • The students who make up the UD River Stewards joined with artists Susan Byrnes and Dennie Eagleson to offer a new perspective on the beautiful architecture of our area bridges.
  • Lesley Walton offers graphite drawings of the true beauty of our region – the people. Her work shows off the inner spirit of the people who contribute to making the Oregon District a thriving and vibrant neighborhood.
  • Lea Wise-Surguy offers photographs of urban Dayton – people, places and what you find while walking, biking and exploring the city.
  • Bill Woody shares beautiful photographs of the historic Downtown Dayton Arcade. Using light, architecture and models, he tells a story and shows the beauty of one of the region’s past glories.

Thanks to ALL the artists who contributed their time and talents to help make Dayton a more vibrant community. Although their work shined a spotlight on their favorite neighborhood or community feature, it is true that our local artists are truly one of our greatest community assets.
