***DEADLINE EXTENDED TO OCTOBER 12***

FINAL round of Activated Spaces Street Team invites artists to submit digital work for long-term window displays to beautify currently vacant downtown buildings.

As part of the Greater Downtown Dayton Plan, the Activated Spaces team has been charged with making downtown more vibrant and inviting. What better way to do so than filling currently vacant storefront windows with local artwork? In the early stages, displays were themed and refreshed with each Urban Nights, allowing new artists to display their talent, and to offer a chance for established artists to show off their dynamic range. The initial installation (“Celebrating Dayton”) was a great success. Artists and groups showcased Dayton’s cultural diversity through depictions of various festivals. Next, local artists put their favorite downtown neighborhoods in the limelight when the “Spotlight Dayton” theme came on display in the fall. Our third installation “Naturally Dayton,” challenged artists to focus on our beautiful outdoor assets.

Whereas early displays were temporary, the fourth and FINAL installation of the Activated Spaces Street Team will exhibit artwork as a graphic display, printed on a vinyl window cling. This allows for a more long-term beautification of our downtown space until entrepreneurs move their businesses into these spaces. Check out Dayton Creative Syndicate’s Activated Spaces windows at the Biltmore Tower on the corner of First and Main for examples. Because the final installation will be printed on these vinyl clings, all artwork must be submitted in a high-resolution digital file. Artists using other media are still encouraged to apply, but the work must fit the submission criteria below. (For example, if you are a pottery artist, display your colorful work in a digital collage for the window cling.)

The Fall 2012 installation theme, “Colorful Dayton,” encourages artists to showcase how “colorful” our community is. Artists can focus on their favorite mural, park, or maybe Dayton’s cultural diversity. We’re looking for your perception of Dayton’s colorful side. We need artists who can showcase downtown Dayton and the vibrancy it has to offer. We welcome artists’ interpretation of the theme however loose or literal it may be; if the artwork is not an exact demonstration of the theme, the artist statement should demonstrate how the work is tied to the theme.

Entries will be judged by the Activated Spaces volunteer team. For this installation, we can only consider digital submissions. Those selected will have their work displayed on a large window cling for an extended period of time. The top 10 entries will be awarded a $100 honorarium for their work. Activated Spaces will cover the cost of printing and installation of the window clings.

SCOPE OF WORK

  • Final size of clings will be no larger than 42” x 54”.  All window clings will be rectangular and cut-outs are not possible.
  • A $100 honorarium per selected artist will be provided.
  • Artists are free to choose medium of artwork (painting, photography, 3-dimensional, etc), but all work must be digitized prior to submission.
  • Artists will create and submit final digital image file in high resolution (at least 300 dpi) as installations will be printed on large window-covering clings. See guidelines for image files below.
  • Artists must submit work by October 12, 2012, for consideration.
  • Artist’s name and title of the display will be highlighted in an area of the window cling, plus a QR code will take visitors to the artist’s page on activatedspaces.org.
  • Do you have questions on how to digitize while maintaining the integrity of your work? Contact Matt Jackson at Digital Fringe at 937-331-5388 or [email protected]
