Dayton, Ohio (May 3, 2016) ― Two new businesses are preparing to open this spring as part of the tenth phase of the Pop-Up Project, part of an initiative to fill downtown storefronts called Activated Spaces. Soccer Shots, located at 39 S. St. Clair in St. Clair Lofts is an engaging children’s soccer program with a focus on personal development. The program offers a high-energy, fun introduction to the world of soccer to children ages 2-8 years old. Soccer Shots will open on Friday, May 6, for First Friday and open during the Downtown Dayton Partnership’s Housing Tour from 1-5 p.m. Saturday, May 7. A second Pop-Up Shop is in lease negotiations and will be announced later this month with an opening planned for June.

The new shops are part of the tenth retail phase of the Pop-Up Project. This program builds on the success of the first nine phases of the Pop-Up Project, launched in November 2011. The Pop-Up Project provides potential business owners the opportunity for shorter leases at below-market rates as a way for them to jump-start their businesses and contribute to the vibrancy of downtown Dayton. Since it was started, the project has launched 24 shops (17 of which are currently open), filled approximately 17,000 square feet of previously vacant space and created 47 jobs. “We are thrilled to add Soccer Shots to the diverse group of small businesses that have opened downtown through the Activated Spaces program,” said Pop-Up project leader, Melanie Wagner. “Soccer Shots, which brings soccer skills and character development to children in Dayton and the surrounding area, is also bringing a unique and exciting new offering to downtown Dayton.”

Pop-Up Shops from the previous phases of the project include Beaute Box, 116 W. Fifth St.; Vintage Barber Shop, 110 W. Fifth St.; Peace on Fifth, 234 Dutoit St.; Green Baby, now located at the 2nd Street Market; two stores at 16 Brown St., Spice Paradise and Hicks’ Barber Shop & Shave Parlor; Confetti, 42 W. Fifth St; Ambition Magazine; Twist Cupcakery, 25 S. St. Clair St.; Fronana, 27 W. First Street; Baker Salvage, 31 S. St. Clair St.; Roberta’s Downtown Massage (formerly Kneaded Bodies Massage), 29 W. first St.; and Mitosis, 14 W. First St. In addition, Sew Dayton, 261 Wayne Ave., has expanded to a new location over twice the size of their original Pop-Up Shop location, and Catapult Creative, currently at 133 N. Ludlow St., is in preparations to move into a larger space located at 10 N. Ludlow St. this summer.

The Pop-Up Project is driven by volunteers from the young professional organizations UpDayton and Generation Dayton with support from the Downtown Dayton Partnership, the City of Dayton, the City of Dayton Neighborhood Mini-Grant program and community volunteers. Activated Spaces is part of the Greater Downtown Dayton Plan, a strategic blueprint for the future of downtown.
